Chapter 16
Rett grumbled to himself and wondered how he had wound up here.
That morning, as he and Cory were getting ready to go in to the Portyards for the Sunday afternoon game against the Brewers, and as Val was getting ready to go back to Montgomery, the pressure was applied.
Val agreed with Cory that Rett needed to go. He could go to patch things up with his dad. He could go just to wish him a good recovery and nothing else. He could go to see if his mom maybe was finally getting the depression treatment Val agreed she needed. He could go to ignore both of them and see Bo. He could go to see if his dad’s nurse was a cute guy and then hit on him in front of them. He could go and flaunt his education and his job as a final “fuck you” to his dad. Val wasn’t picky about the reason, but she thought it was a mistake to pass up the opportunity since his mother had reached out to him.
Rett had tried to trot out the same excuses he had given to Cory in the middle of the night, but Val was even less inclined to listen to them than Cory was. In fact, she seemed to get irate at the fact that he was looking for excuses to not go. Val had enough history with Rett to where she didn’t stand on ceremony or subtlety or deference at all. She told him point blank to get his freckled ass to Dothan and see them.
Cory was more gently encouraging.
They all still seemed to be at a stalemate when Val left and Rett and Cory carpooled in to the Portyards.
Right as they arrived at the stadium, Rett received the text from Val:
I kno yr not gonna go, so I am. On my way to Dothan!
What irritated Rett was that he knew she might very well do it. After some of the other stunts she had pulled over the years, this would be cake for her. Even if she didn’t go, Rett could tell she’d be on him about it from then on.
So he had caved.
He sent a text back to Val saying he was going. He let Dr. Bala know what was going on, and Dr. Bala was very understanding and fine with him taking off for the day. He gave the trainers Rikky and Ryan some notes for things to do on his behalf while he was away. And finally, he made sure Cory would be able to get a ride home after the game, which was the least of Cory’s worries. Since he wasn’t pitching that day, Cory offered again to go with him, even if he just sat in the car, but Rett insisted he needed to do this alone if he was going to do it.
He had kept his resolve to see it through, to pull some kind of good out of the situation, during the entire drive from Mobile to Dothan.
